A few years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to experience the artistry of Mickalene Thomas, and it left an indelible mark on my creative spirit. Her exhibition showcased a mesmerizing series of portraits celebrating black women. The vivid colors and the exquisite touch of rhinestones added a captivating sparkle, revealing the profound connection between the artist and her subjects. There was a palpable sense of history in these works, seamlessly interwoven with a refreshing contemporary twist.

In my artwork, I aimed to echo the resonance of that transformative show. The essence of the past, perennial and enchanting. I meticulously layered vibrant colors, repeating them with similar but dulled hues. Then, daringly, I inverted the layers and carefully reassembled them, creating a visual rhythm that mirrored the essence of Mickalene’s portraits.

One particular section of the museum transported me straight into a 1970s living room, radiating love through Mickalene’s meticulous work. It was this blend of nostalgia and modernity that lingered in my thoughts and inspired my latest piece.

As I worked, some layers naturally tore apart, presenting a moment of serendipity. Initially, I sought to repair the damage, but then it hit me – the beauty in imperfection. These accidental openings became reminiscent of an old, cherished blanket, each hole holding a unique story.
Originally titled “what colors did mickalene thomas use in the 1970s,” my artwork took an unexpected turn when my husband observed, “it looks like Crayons.” Suddenly, everything clicked. I envisioned Mickalene herself in that 1970s living room, surrounded by crayons and paper, laying the foundation for her extraordinary future.

This piece became more than a mere homage; it became a visual narrative, capturing the spirit of Mickalene Thomas’s artistry and the timeless beauty of embracing the past while forging ahead into a colorful future.
